Chainsaw Wood Carving

finish planer

The art of chainsaw wood carving is an art form that many artists are beginning to explore. It is a natural extension to their skills set and often includes a mixture of traditional carving techniques with modern designs. Crager and his wife, Tracie Dugas, have carved beautiful wood creations since the 1960s. They try to stay home as much as they can to do some staining or painting between shows. His daughters are now involved in his work as well, helping out on occasion with painting or staining. They also prefer to use white pine, which is lighter and less likely to crack.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson is a chainsaw woodcarver from Reedsport, Oregon. He is a native of Poughkeepsie and lives with his wife and son. Anderson has several degrees in fine arts. He teaches art to Pre-K through fifth graders. Anderson has created many sculptures on Long Island, and even one in Colorado. His pieces include standing trees as well as smaller pieces such corn ear sculptures. He is currently working on a sign for Youngs Farm in Riverhead.

A $400 chainsaw allows him to create beautiful sculptures that would take days to chisel out of a tree. Chainsaw wood carving can also be used to create beautiful sculptures that are more environmentally friendly than hammers and chisels. Anderson markets his business via word of mouth. Anderson carved a massive cobra for Wading Rive and a great-blue heron as a mechanic.

Tracie Dugas

Tracie dugas's life-size wood carving of a wizard is an excellent example of her ability as a woodcarver using a chainsaw. The young woman, 49, lives in Clare, Nova Scotia, between Digby and Yarmouth. The chainsaw wood carver, was among many artists who showed their work during Canada Day weekend in Sydney. The Sydney waterfront was flooded with tourists, but the brief dry spell provided a perfect opportunity for locals to enjoy the waterfront and catch a glimpse of the chainsaw artist.

Tim Crager

Tim Crager, while he didn't consider him an artist and wasn't very skilled with a saw chainsaw, turned his passion into a full time career in carving six years back. Crager sold more than $1million worth of carvings over the Eastern U.S. in his six-year career. Crager was born in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky. He grew up watching the chainsaw wood carver at his work. Crager fell in love with the artist's art and gave his two-week notice to his boss.

Crager favors white pine over other wood types because it is easily accessible from tree trimming companies. However, many people prefer other kinds of wood. Crager works with the grain of wood as a guide and let the saw do the rest. Crager may know exactly what he's making before he starts any project. However, he often changes his mind mid-project. For small projects, it takes less than an hour. Large carvings can take 33 to 35hrs.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins works as a chainsaw-woodcarver. His wood carvings include detailed animals and often include multiple animals. His works have been admired by neighbors and tourists alike. The chainsaw sculptures are so large and detailed that they adorn the entrance and coffee shop at Blue Arrow Farm. Blue Arrow Farm's owner is Don Oriolo. He also manages Felix the Cat. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo's spouse, met at the New Jersey State Fair during a chainsaw contest.

The 15-year-old wood carver and winner of the award was inspired to start carving at a Reedsport competition. He had already carved by hand, but he had never used a chainsaw before. His carvings include an otter and a mother bear, as well as a squirrel peeking through a tree. He's now getting ready for the National Chainsaw Carving Competition.

However, before he became well-known, he spent years woodcarving for the timber industry and was able to meet other like-minded individuals. Here are some of the things that made him a world-class wood carver:

FAQ

Where can I begin with woodworking

Learning how to build furniture is the best method. While you will need tools, mistakes are inevitable, but you will learn the ropes if you persevere.

First, choose a project you would like to complete. It can be something as simple and small as a box, or large-scale as an entertainment center. Once you've settled on a project find a local skilled woodworker. Ask them for suggestions on the tools you will need and where to buy them. It's possible to ask your friend if they do this type of work.

What tools work best for me?

It helps to reflect on your needs and preferences before you shop for tools. Are you more comfortable with plastic or metal handles? What size of nails and screws do your hands use most? Are you more comfortable using power tools than hand tools?

What is the difference between a hobbyist or a professional woodworker, and how can you tell?

Hobbyists love making things from wood while professionals are more concerned with the quality of their work. Hobbyists often take pride in the creations they make and often share them to family and friends. Professionals will spend hours looking at designs before they start to build a project. They'll pay great attention to details, from choosing the most suitable materials to finishing the work perfectly.

What time does it take for furniture to be finished?

It depends on the size and condition of the furniture. Smaller projects like boxes and picture frames can be finished within one day. Larger projects such as tables and desks can take several days to complete. It takes time to stain and seal the wood properly.

  • The best-paid 10 percent make $76,000, while the lowest-paid 10 percent make $34,000. (zippia.com)

How To

How to stain wood

Staining wood can be described as a process where chemicals are applied to the wood surface. This causes the wood to take on a new color. The wood will turn from white to brownish-red due to the chemical reaction. Oak is the most commonly used wood for staining, but other woods can also be stained.

There are many options for applying stains to wood surfaces. Some methods involve mixing the stain with a solvent (such as turpentine) and then brushing or spraying the mixture onto the wood. Others use a solution made up of water and dye, which is then applied directly onto the wood. You can also mix stains with varnishes or paints so that they become part the finish coating.

Preparing the surface is the most important step in staining wooden surfaces. To apply the stain, clean the wood completely. Sanding smoothens any scratches or rough spots. You must then decide on the type of stain that you wish to use. Penetrating stains are different from non-penetrating. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper into the wood than non-penetrating ones, making them ideal for dark colors such as mahogany. The best non-penetrating colors are those that work with light colors like maple.

After deciding on the type of stain, you want to apply, prepare your tools. A paintbrush works well for applying stains because it allows you to spread the liquid evenly across the surface. You should also have some handy rags to wipe up excess stains after you finish painting. If you plan to mix the stain yourself, make sure you have enough containers available to hold the different components of the mixture.

After you have prepared the materials, you can clean the area where you want to stain the wood. To remove dirt and dust, use warm water and soap. You can wipe down the entire furniture using a damp rag with clean water. Take care to remove all debris and dirt, especially if you are planning on staining darker wood.

Next, spray the stain. Apply the stain by brushing or spraying it onto one side of the furniture. Slowly and carefully work your way along the grain to reach the opposite end. The stain should not drip off of the wood's edge. Before you proceed with the next steps, let the stain dry completely.

Apply a clear polyurethane sealant to protect the painted surface. Three coats of polyurethane sealing agent are required. Allow the third coat to dry overnight before sanding the final coat.
