How To

Tips on how to drive a nail in wood

When driving a nail into wood, it is important to first choose the correct size and kind of hammer. The most common types of hammers are claw hammers, sledgehammers, mallets, ball peen hammers, and hatchets. Each type of tool has its advantages and drawbacks. A claw hammer works well when you're trying to hit nails with a heavy hammer. However it is difficult to precisely control where the blow hits. A sledgehammer allows you to hit large areas simultaneously, but it is too heavy and cumbersome to use for small tasks.

After you've chosen the right tool, hold your hand flat to the handle so it rests comfortably in one of your palms. You can grip the handle with your fingers, but not so tight that it causes injury. Hold the hammer straight up, keeping your wrist relaxed. Then swing the hammer back toward the ground, aiming for the center of the nail. The impact of the hammer hitting the nail should be felt. If you're having trouble getting the hang of swinging a hammer, practice with a block of wood until you get the rhythm down.

Once you are ready to drive the nail, place the hammer close to your body. The nail should be perpendicular to wood's surface. Your eyes should be focused on the nail's tip. Swing the hammer forward, then follow through with the motion of the hammerhead. You can repeat this several times, increasing your swing speed. When you are confident with the technique, add power to your swings. Try holding the hammer above your shoulder and bring it down forcefully. You will be able to use more energy and put your best foot forward.

Once you've nailed the first hole, remove the hammer from the nail. The rest of the nails can be pulled out using a screwdriver, pry bar, or a hammer. To prevent splitting the wood, ensure you keep the nail heads flush against the board's surface.
