How To

Tips for driving a nail in wood

First, choose the right size and type of tool to drive a nail through wood. Claw hammers include mallets, claw hammers (sledgehammers), mallets, ball-peen hammers, hatchets, and mallets. Each kind of hammer has its own advantages and disadvantages. A claw hammer, for example, is the best choice if you need to hit nails hard. However, it's not easy to know exactly where the impact will land. A sledgehammer is great for hitting large areas at once, but it's too heavy to use effectively for smaller tasks.

Once you have chosen the right hammer for you, put your hand flat against its side so that it rests comfortably in the palm of your hand. Take the handle and hold it with both hands. But don't press down so hard you injure yourself. Your wrist should be relaxed while you hold the hammer straight upwards. Now, move the hammer towards the center of the nail by swinging it back. You should feel the impact from the hammer striking a nail. Try practicing with a block to help you master the art of swinging a stick.

The hammer should be held close to your body when you are ready to begin driving the nail. Position the nail, so it's perpendicular to the surface of the wood. Your eyes should be focused on the nail's tip. Swing the hammer forward, then follow through with the motion of the hammerhead. Repeat this action several times, gradually increasing the speed of the swing. Once you have mastered this technique, increase the power of your swings. You can hold the hammer over your shoulder and forcefully bring it down. You will be able to use more energy and put your best foot forward.

Once you have successfully drilled the first hole in the nail, remove the hammer. To pull out the remaining nails, use a screwdriver or pry bar. Keep the nails heads in line with the surface of the board to prevent splitting the wood.
