Chainsaw Wood Carving

wood tools

Many artists are now exploring the art of chainsaw wood carving. This art form is an extension of their skills and often uses a mix of traditional and modern carving techniques. Crager and Tracie Dugas, his wife, have been creating beautiful wood carvings since the 1960s. In between shows, they try to get home as much as possible to help out with painting and staining. His daughters now help him with staining and painting, as well. White pine is preferred by them as it is lighter and less susceptible to cracking.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson, a chainsaw wood carver from Reedsport in Oregon, is Rich Anderson. He is a native of Poughkeepsie and lives with his wife and son. Anderson is a graduate in fine arts with several degrees. He also teaches art to pre-K to fifth graders. He has carved many sculptures around Long Island and has even created sculptures in Colorado. His works include sculptures made from corn ear and standing trees. He is currently working to create a sign for Youngs Farm, Riverhead.

The $400 chainsaw lets him create intricate sculptures that would have taken days to chisel from a tree. Because they can be recycled, chainsaw wood carving is a more eco-friendly option than chisels or hammers. Anderson promotes his business by word of mouth. He has created a huge cobra and great blue heron to help a Wading River mechanic.

Tracie Dugas

Tracie Dugas created this life-sized wizard from wood. It is a stunning example of her skills as a chainsaw wood carver. The 49-year old woman lives in Clare, Nova Scotia between Digby & Yarmouth. The chainsaw wood carver was one of several artists who exhibited their work during the Canada Day weekend in Sydney, Nova Scotia. While tourists were flooding Sydney's waterfront, locals had the chance to see the chainsaw artist while enjoying the short dry spell.

Tim Crager

Tim Crager, while he didn't consider him an artist and wasn't very skilled with a saw chainsaw, turned his passion into a full time career in carving six years back. Crager sold more than $1million worth of carvings over the Eastern U.S. in his six-year career. Crager was raised in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky. His father was a chainsaw wood carver. Crager fell in love with the artist's art and gave his two-week notice to his boss.

Crager prefers white Pine because it's easy to find from tree trimming firms. However, many people prefer other kinds of wood. Crager follows the grain of the wood and lets the saw guide his creations. Crager will change his mind during a project. However, he usually knows what he is going to make. A small project can be done in an hour, while a large one may take 33 to 35 hours.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins is an expert chainsaw and wooden carver. His wood carvings are intricate and often feature many animals. His creations are a hit with tourists and locals alike. The chainsaw sculptures are so large and detailed that they adorn the entrance and coffee shop at Blue Arrow Farm. Don Oriolo owns Blue Arrow Farm and is an artist and manager of Felix the Cat. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo’s wife, met while they were competing in a New Jersey State Fair-sponsored chainsaw contest.

The award-winning wood carver began carving in a contest in Reedsport, Oregon 15 years ago. He was already skilled at carving by hand, but had never used a saw before. How To

How to make wood joint

This tutorial will teach you how to join two pieces wood together. We'll use the "pocket hole joint," which means we drill holes in the wood and then glue them together. This method works great if your wood is straight and smooth. Try dowel joinery instead if your wood doesn't look straight. These are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. You will need to measure and mark the exact location of your pocket hole joint. With a handheld drill machine or jig saw, drill 3/4-inch deep holes in the ends of each piece.
  2. Sand Smooth. The wood's edges can be sanded to prevent splitting.
  3. Glue together. Apply glue to both the ends of the wood. Let the wood sit for 5 minutes, then clamp it together.
  4. Clamp the Pieces Together. After the glue has dried you can attach the pieces to form a flush joint.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trim any excess wood surrounding the joint once the glue has dried completely.

Be sure to leave enough space between each piece so that they can be turned inside-out.
