How to Cut Rough Lumber

traditional carpentry techniques

It can be difficult to transport rough lumber in your car. Take your handsaw and tape measure along with you to the shop. Also, make sure to buy extra boards in the event that the one you have purchased doesn't fit. Also, be sure to purchase the board with checks and knots, as they may not get planed down as you expect. You don't want the board to be ripped and you have to start over. It's a waste of time and money to do this, so you can buy one or two additional boards.

Less wastage

When cutting rough lumber, a sawmill typically turns 59% of the log volume into boards. The rest of a log is usually waste: sawdust chips, bark and chips. The log should be cut to a smaller size, but not more than 20%. Here's how to estimate the amount wasted wood in a board. For a nominal 4-foot board, the sawmill should remove about 18% of its volume to achieve the desired lumber thickness and width.

For one thing, rough lumber rarely comes in uniform dimensions. You can plan your project around the dimensions of hardwood purchased at big-box stores. That means the edges of rough lumber don't always line up, resulting in waste. Also, rough-cut lumber is usually of a similar width. This results in a lot more lumber being wasted. These wastes can't be recycled later.

Preparation

Preparing for rough lumber cutting is as simple as measuring the material. The lumber yard may not have the rough lumber perfectly flat upon arrival. You may need to flatten it several times as it may not have parallel edges or faces. It is a good rule of thumb to take out 1/16" per pass. If the lumber has concave surfaces, run it through the saw with the concave surface down.

In general, rough cut lumber should not be more than 1/4" thick before the saw cuts. After flattening and sanding the face, plane it to the thickness of your finished board. Once you have measured the rough lumber's thickness, measure the finished width & length. Remember to plan around any imperfections that may be present. Always leave a margin of about one-quarter inch on both sides of the board, and plan your project around the available boards. You will have a difficult time working with rough lumber if it is warped, bent, or twisted.

Cost

There are two types, dimensional lumber and rough sawn lumber. Home improvement stores generally carry finished lumber but very rarely rough-sawn. Both types of lumber are typically carried by local sawmills or lumber yards. The only difference between these two types lies in the work involved. Because it is less processed, rough-sawn boards can be more economical. It is also more flexible than finished lumber in that it can be cut wider and thinner.

While purchasing lumber from a mill/lumber yard is usually cheaper, it is less likely that the lumber will be available in standard lengths. While milling your lumber yourself can be cheaper than purchasing rough-sawn lumber at a lumber yard or mill, it will require more space and better power. Milling equipment also requires training and can be noisy. It is important to know the laws that govern your locality if you plan on using your mill.

When buying lumber, you have a number of options. There are many sizes and shapes to choose from, as well as different finishes. Rough sawn lumber is unfinished, unsanded lumber that has been cut into planks. This type lumber is typically stronger than other types of lumber because it carries more moisture. However, it's also thicker then surfaced timber. These are some of the advantages you have when using rough sawn timber for your woodworking projects.

The first pro is its low cost and availability. Rough lumber does not need to be treated and cannot usually be purchased at a hardware shop. However, this type of lumber has its pros and cons. This lumber is cheaper per board foot but less expensive by volume. Also, this wood is more labor-intensive than treated wood. So, you might want to consider this option when you're deciding how much lumber to buy. Consider purchasing large quantities of rough sawn lumber and small amounts for finishing if you intend to use it for your project.

FAQ

How much should a Woodworker Charge per Hour?

The hourly rate for a professional woodworker varies depending on many factors, including skill level, experience, availability, location, and other variables.

The hourly average rate for skilled woodworkers runs between $20-$50.

A less skilled woodworker might charge as low as $10 per hour.

Is there anything else I should know about woodworking?

It's easy to underestimate the amount of work involved in making furniture. Finding the right type of wood is the most difficult aspect of this process. There are so many varieties of wood available that choosing one can be difficult.

Another issue is that wood does not have the same properties. Some woods will warp over time, others will split or crack. You must take these things into consideration before purchasing wood.

Can I refinish furniture that I make?

Yes! You don't have to hire a professional to refinish furniture. There are many ways you can do it yourself. Here are a few suggestions:

Sandpaper can be used to remove stains and scratches. Finally, use a clean cloth or sponge to clean the surface.

Apply clear polyurethane paint. Allow furniture to dry completely before you move it around.

Paint furniture with acrylic paint.

Use stain instead of paint. The furniture will get a rich look with the stain.

Apply shellac wax. The wax will add shine to the wood and protect it.

Statistics

  • Overall employment of woodworkers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations. (bls.gov)
  • Most woodworkers agree that lumber moisture needs to be under 10% for building furniture. (woodandshop.com)
  • Average lumber prices rose about 600 percent between April 2020 and May 2021. (familyhandyman.com)
  • Woodworkers on the lower end of that spectrum, the bottom 10% to be exact, make roughly $24,000 a year, while the top 10% makes $108,000. (zippia.com)

How To

How can you accurately measure wood?

We use several methods to measure wood. We use a digital caliper (a tool used to measure distances), a laser level (used to make sure your work surface is flat), and a bubble level (used to make sure your work surface is perpendicular).

Two jaws can be opened and closed on a digital caliper. The first jaw holds the object, and the second measures the distance between them. The digital caliper is great for measuring small distances like thicknesses of wood.

Laser levels use an infrared beam of light to project a line across the ground. The laser emits a red dot on the line. The line can be viewed down to determine if the surface has an even surface. For large surfaces, laser levels are the best way to check their accuracy.

Bubble levels look similar to a compass. The device has a bubble at its center. As long the bubble is not in the middle, the device will show you whether the surface of the object is level. Bubble levels are great for checking the accuracy and precision of smaller areas.
